Course description

Explore the fundamentals of computer networking with this online course for teachers. This course will help you understand the basics of computer networking, all the way from the links that data travels across, up to applications that communicate across networks. It will also help you think about how you can teach this topic in your class.

On this course, you will learn to describe the different types of computer networks and understand how data can be transmitted securely. You will cover real world usage of networking technology to enhance your understanding. You will also become more familiar with how the internet works, including routing, DNS, and the world wide web.

What you will learn

After completing these three modules, you will be able to:

  • Compare different types of data connections and network models

  • Identify the different layers of the TCP/IP stack and how they work together through encapsulation and decapsulation

  • Explain the need for protocols, and describe the different protocols that act at each layer of the TCP/IP stack

  • Describe how routers use some of these protocols to route data around the world

  • Contrast the internet with the services that run over it, including the world wide web
